Tern Eclipse X22 - Our First Impressions

Paddy reviewed the Tern Eclipse X22 recently and this is what he had to share.

Words and Photography: Paddy

I got the Tern Eclipse X22 on a Saturday night and haven't had much time to familiarize with it on the handling as I have always been on a road bike for the longest time.

The night before, I set the height of the seatpost, handlebar, checked the tire pressure and felt ready to roll.

The first thing that differentiates it from many other foldable bike is the size. It is big with a hand-built 26” wheels and yet the geometry was very race-like like a road bike.

The Eclipse X22 comes with an Ultegra drivetrain, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes which needs some time to get used to; don't brake too hard, just a tap will do.

The entire build is beautiful with a black finish from the top to the end and on its hydroformed fork, it encompasses matching handlebars and a really good saddle.

On Sunday morning, I took it for a 70km ride from the North of Singapore to the Central via the park connector (https://www.nparks.gov.sg/gardens-parks-and-nature/park-connector-network) and some distance on the road shared with other moving vehicles.

While it handled differently from a road bike, the pedalling makes it easy to keep a constant speed without much effort on flats or up the slope too. The cadence is easily maintained as the hub and wheels ensure a very smooth transition and shifting going from low to high gears when needed. All this have to be credited to the Aluminium spindle with its oversized outboard bearings to make it all happen.

Beside the speed that it can achieved, I love the Kinetix Pro Handlebar a lot. The grip is solid giving me a very stable handling when going at high speed or when making corners at a lower pace. Without having the need to grip it too hard, the controlling makes it very easy to manage at any time. It is a rather big improvement from many other handlebars that I have come across with.

As I do not have a spacious house, especially with an active 5 year old son and a daughter who just learnt to crawl, I have to ensure this Eclipse X22 can be folded easily and stored at a corner in the study room.

Folding is relatively easy and if you are already familiar with N-fold that Tern has, it is no biggie to just fold and unfold within a few seconds, all thanks to this OCL Frame Joint that Tern developed. Also at the handlebar, the Physis 3D Handlepost makes it easy to fold and unfold too, just by snapping the unlocking lever.

As I cruise along the road, this larger than life foldie commands a sense of superiority with its top notch tech-enabled features and functions all thrown into this beautifully constructed bike.

I have no regrets riding one.
